Technology has a funny reverse mentoring effect on parents and children; our older daughter was showing us how to group apps on an iPhone the other night, while our younger daughter is more fluent with toggling between the DVR, Wii, and PS3 on our new universal remote than anyone.

Teach Parents Tech

Seeing how many kids were coming home from school only to be asked to be ‘tech support’ for their parents, a bunch of colleagues at Google got together and created this compendium of short “how to” videos, perfect for passing on to less adept loved ones.  TeachParentsTech.Org will make you smile (and/or make you feel slightly patronized), but whether you are the primary target, or in turn want to pass it up a generation, the videos housed here are super short (under a minute each) and super simple.  Thus they offer perfect little tutorials on some of the basics, from How to Change Your Desktop Background to How to Make Bookmarks to How to Make Calls From a Computer.  We especially like when they distinguish versions between MAC and PC.

The site invites kids to send their parents (or anyone) a “tech support package,” i.e. a fun form letter that wraps the sharing of one or more of these how-to videos with those deemed most in need.

Actually writing your powerpoint presentations for you – not included.
