In our participatory media world, we asked our broader community, including our Twitter followers, to share their thoughts on what might make for a great Momorandum.  This was one of our favorite previously unknown gems we got back:

For those of us for whom travel is a big part of work, we think SmartWomenTravelers.com is a worthy detour…

It’s a resource specifically for women travelers, with content from experts on travel, relationships, health and fitness on the road, and parenting as a traveling mom.   Some of the helpful content we found as we explored:

  • Travel-oriented iPhone Apps

  • A packing list of must-have accessories for when you travel

  • Managing tarmac delays by sending text alerts when the flight departs and lands to anyone waiting for you through services like flightstats.com, or once in the sky, letting those waiting for you track your flight on flightaware.com

The site was founded by well-traveled consultant Carol Margolis, who attests to having raised two children while being on the road the majority of their childhood (with many of those years as a single mom, no less).  Her blog, PearllsofTravelWisdom.com, links from the site; one of our favorite posts is from just two weeks ago, titled “Traveling on business is GOOD for kids– and for mom.”  Written by guest blogger Phaedra Cucina, author of the children’s book, My Mommy’s on a Business Trip, it offers a guilt-absolving litany of benefits to all when travel arises.

Speaking personally as the type for whom business travel is the thing that tips the (emotional) scales off kilter every time, the idea of having a community of other business-traveling women around the world to connect with is almost as good as a night of room service, and uninterrupted sleep.

Camp for Everyone (A Special Offer for Executive Moms)

Have you ever been to (or heard of) Club Getaway?  A picturesque camp facility in the Berkshire Mountains (in Kent, CT), it goes from kids camp during the week, to playground for adults during the weekends (something we experienced personally in our single days, drawn by its Club-Med-meets-sleepaway-camp concept.

With a nod to our current life stage, we were smiling to learn that they have introduced special weekend getaways designed for the whole family.  If you are nostalgic for your own camp days or just want to experience all that is great about camp, all together, this could be a great little end-of-summer excursion.  The kids have fully supervised activities (at least kids over 4; younger ones are welcome but need parental accompaniment); the grown-ups meantime get to hike, waterski, play tennis, practice yoga, or just relax by the lake.  Campfires and smores are involved (and while the bunks are rustic, they do have A/C).

A special offer for Executive Moms: mention “Executive Moms” when you book a Club Getaway family package, and receive a $200 family discount.

Hold Court this Monday (and Help Several Causes)

We wanted to offer a quick plug for a great event this Monday being held by the iStar Charity Foundation, which exists to broaden awareness and increase charitable contributions for existing non-profit organizations committed to human rights, youth & family sustainability and education.

It’s their 7th Annual Charity Shootout, from 6:00 to 9:00 this Monday, July 20th at Madison Square Garden.  You and your family will have a chance to hit the court to drill, dribble, shoot and score with some of basketball’s greats from the New York Knicks, Liberty and Harlem Wizards… and enjoy lots of entertainment.  There is no charge to attend, but space is limited.  Proceeds that are generated from the event will benefit four charitable organizations: Baby Buggy, Teach for America, Robin Hood and Human Rights First.
