There is barely an industry or age group that has not felt squeezed by the overall contraction in our national job market.  For impending or recent college graduates — and their parents — their timing in first entering the job force could not feel worse.  In better years, the challenge of transitioning from a desk in a dorm to a desk in an office had become increasingly competitive.  Today, the statistical odds of a new college grad finding gainful professional employment are enough to hasten their retreat under the covers in their old bedroom at home… or march to grad school to delay the process.

Parents of new and recent college grads might want to send them packing instead: to Career Boot Camp

When we heard about this idea, conceived by two of our favorite Executive Moms partners, Everything Summer CEO Jill Tipograph and Women for Hire CEO (and one of our luncheon event panelists) Tory Johnson, who came together for this initiative, we thought it was a pretty brilliant recognition of a considerable need.   Career Boot Camp NYC is a 2-day program for college students and graduates, offering a crash course in how to jumpstart a first career today.  Without dwelling on those dim statistics referenced above, the reality is a college student or grad in 2009 is facing significantly reduced on campus recruiting, fewer openings and stiffer competition overall.

This Boot Camp is intended to provide some remedy to those disadvantages, by giving these new job seekers the chance to meet face-to-face with dozens of recruiters and industry executives from a range of fields, including business, media, marketing, health care and technology.  There are also guidance sessions on mastering Self-Promotion, managing and maximizing your Digital Identities, and Effective Interviewing.

The first Career Boot Camp is June 3rd-4th in New York City.  The cost is $399 (comparable to just an hour or so of career coaching).  All registrations received by April 15th qualify for an early-bird rate of $299.  If you are still a few years away from needing this for your own kids, whisper a little thanks… and pass it along to friends with older kids (or think perfect graduation gift for a favorite niece or nephew).
