Generally, when we feature a book, it's a work of non-fiction tied to career or some aspect of parenting.  Yet in thinking about what to feature this week (and also feeling a strong need to curl up with a really great read right about now), it seemed worthy to call-out our favorite book choice of the past year (have you already read it too)?

Our Must-Read from the Past Year: "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin

We were lucky enough to be turned on to this amazingly inspirational non-fiction account by a close friend (and Executive Moms member, of course)… and like the millions around the world who have also discovered it, it was truly transformative.  If reading about a free spirit who winds up on a quest to build schools in Pakistan does not sound like your cup of tea: reconsider. The story does follow that, after a failed attempt to scale K2 landed him in one of the most remote villages in Pakistan, Greg Mortenson went on to dedicate his life to building schools in this nation and world so different from ours– focusing in particular on the importance of educating girls.  In the process, it becomes clear just how powerful this singular, humble effort has been in opening minds, changing perceptions, and accomplishing more toward understanding and peace than the arsenal of weapons we more typically wield.

At a time when hope and heroism seem at a premium, we could not recommend more this unlikely source of both. Though we have not read it yet, there is a new Young Reader's Edition of "Three Cups of Tea." Clearly, a story worth sharing with our own children.

While we always strive to take the optimists' view, the pervasiveness of job loss right now (or the threat of it) has us thinking anew about how much the "executive" side of our "Executive Mom" equation influences our sense of selves.
