As the holidays are just days away, our spinning world has given us new pause to consider this time of year as a season of giving

Resources for Giving Back

In the spirit of our new blog post, should you be inspired to get out and do something individually or as a family, even on a one-time-only basis, there are some great resources that aggregate volunteer opportunities and make them searchable on a number of criteria, such as geography, timing, and type of activity. Two leading resources likened to a "Craigslist for Service" are:

VolunteerMatch: looks to bring good people and good causes together, with a broad variety of online services to support a community of nonprofit, volunteer and business leaders committed to civic engagement. Their website attracts millions of visitors a year with service opportunities across 61,000 nonprofit organizations. www.volunteermatch.org

Idealist: a project of Action Without Borders, is an interactive site where people and organizations can exchange resources and ideas, locate opportunities and supporters, and "take steps toward building a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives." Currently you can find over 82,000 worthy organizations and 14,000 active volunteer opportunities through them. We have a special affinity for this organization since their Executive Director, Ami Dar, spoke at a past Executive Moms event. www.idealist.org

Excerpts of some recent posts on the Executive Moms Network:

From "What's Your Balance Buster?"

My balance is simple. Whatever is heavier on my shoulders at that point in time seems to take up most of my attention. If I am working on deadlines at work it pours into home. I wait till the girls go to bed and work on the deadlines feeling partially fullfilled because I can do it and still be home in time to put the girls to bed. If I have to help the girls with a school project I do some of the research from work and email them at home to read. Then recap at work. It's a balance that sometimes crosses paths and some may not call it a balance but I live and breath for this because when things are quiet – I am bored. Sad isn't it?

In response to our Blog post on "Feeling the Economic Crisis.. From a Kayak in the Caribbean"

Crisis tend to do something for us that few things can–it gives us the opportunity to "assess and address" our life…in the case of the current economic climate…we are rethinking how we use our resources–our time, talent, and treasure!
