Candy Nobody Wants… Plus More on the new www.executivemoms.com

Did you know that the percentage of Americans celebrating Halloween this year is forecasted to be up significantly versus 2007– in part because of the Friday timing, and in part because our collective psyche needs the distraction of costumes, festivities, and treats.  (In fact this year’s participation is expected to mirror levels last seen in 2002, when we were also in an economic downturn). 

Assuming that enthusiasm translates into an even higher-than-normal proliferation of candy, it’s especially important that the following FDA warning get around, to ensure no one’s sweets turn very sour…

Avoid the potential “trick” unwittingly associated with the following candy brands from China:

  • Koala’s March Creme filled Cookies
  • White Rabbit Candies
  • Sherwood Brands Pirate’s Gold Milk Chocolate Coins

Echoing the scares in recent months over infant formula imported from China, the FDA is warning that these brands of candy could pose a similar risk of containing the same chemical, melamine, that can be toxic.  For perspective, China only accounts for less than 1% of the world’s candy supply… and in instances of minor exposure the risk of major harm is low.  Nonetheless, consider this another reason to screen what comes home in the plastic pumpkins (and you know, if you have to set aside a few pieces that don’t match this list and taste-test, a parent must do what a parent must do)…
