A confession: it’s been a little hard to pick the right Momorandum topics lately, with so much election intrigue and, of course, worries about the economy overwhelming most other concerns.

However, this week also marked the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Duly noting that there are so many important causes, it felt right to turn our focus pink given the impact of this disease on women. This has become an important thrust of my corporate life as well, in working for The Estée Lauder Companies, and thus presented a rare opportunity to bring my two worlds together and share some of these initiatives with you, for a greater good…

You can honor a friend or loved one who is a survivor by sharing their story…

As we all have come to know, the power of online is reaching new heights in enabling participation and word-of-mouth (particularly among women– we being the more social of the species). This campaign, themed “Share a Survivor Story, Inspire the World,” was created with that in mind, so that any of us can spread a message of awareness and hope through positive stories involving living with and conquering this disease. You can upload a photo, a video or write about yourself or someone you know… and then post the entry to your personal web page and/or pass it on to others. Even if you don’t have a story to tell, you can read, rate and review others.

Get Pink on Facebook…

Some of the most popular applications on Facebook like “SuperPoke” and “TopFriends” have taken on a Breast Cancer Awareness message this month in ways uniquely suited to their nature. Throughout the month you can “poke” friends with the iconic pink ribbon (yesterday it was the #1 “poke”). If you use the “Top Friends” application you can also skin your profile with the “World Pink” design created by renowned artist (and breast cancer survivor) Marisa Marchetto Silvano.

Shop for the Cause…

This is the only time I would plug the products I market in my corporate life via Executive Moms… and it’s a worthy exception in that, for every sale of these products, which have been assembled in a “pink boutique” on the website totalbeauty.com, a donation is made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. (Plus almost all of them ship free with the code WORLDPINK at checkout).
