A telling sign of our endemic lack of personal time: a gift certificate for a much-needed massage, lying dormant in a drawer, due only to an inability to find a block of time to enjoy it. If that rings a bell just as your need for a little pampering is as pressing as ever, let us share these stress relievers and pick-me-ups that you can do in minutes– right in your office– adapted from the book Office Spa (Chronicle Books)…

Let Off Some Steam…

Even the most basic office pantries enable making a cup of tea. If you’ve hit midday brain drain after too long in front of the computer, go brew a hot cup of peppermint tea, and while it’s still steaming, close your eyes, bring your face up close, and inhale. Peppermint is known to invigorate your mind; it’s also a natural decongestant (and the steam is great for your skin). For tired eyes, try with chamomile tea and lightly apply cooled-down teabags over eyelids to relieve strain. (Note: none of this is recommended for use while in a large meeting). Then, enjoy the cup of tea.

Instant Acupressure…

No, this is not an equivalent substitute for said massage, above. However, when your heels have been especially unforgiving, or your back is bemoaning that your “‘ron” chair is clearly a fake, bring a couple of golf balls to work and, let them roll. Take off the heels under your desk and roll the soles of your feet firmly over each ball. (With a straight chair this same technique can also work directly with your back’s biggest sore spots). Golf balls, fortunately provide discreet rejuvenation; and in certain office environments might make a savvy desk accessory…

Take a Hike…

Going for a walk around the block is a time-tested form of work break; however, extend this notion to any change of scenery to clear your head or re- energize. This might mean a walk on a different floor of your company, a trip up and down the stairwell… even (for the non claustrophobic) a ride in the elevator that is deliberately aimless and entirely unconnected. Take a few deep breaths (yeah, yeah… but it works). And start it all up again…
