You can jot down the license number to report on a notably terrible or terrific taxi driver or police officer, or even a trucker you see on the highway. Why shouldn’t the same hold true for that most important of ‘drivers’: the one pushing your stroller?

It was this reasoning that led to the creation of HowsMyNanny.com…

HowsMyNanny.com was founded by Jill Starishevsky, a New York Assistant District Attorney in the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Bureau (and a member of Executive Moms). From that professional vantage point, and also from the more common vantage point of a mom looking out onto the playground, Jill recognized that for a nanny’s behavior to be addressed, the parents had to be made aware of what others were seeing.

Unlike surveillance systems, this is a public format for childcare accountability…

While “Nannycams” have their place, we’re drawn to this out-in-the-open, citizen-based approach, that is both simple and inexpensive. Upon registration, you receive a small “license plate” with a unique ID number and the How’s My Nanny website, which you attach to your child’s stroller. Should a concerned citizen want to report an instance of problematic, or emblematic, behavior to the child’s parents, they can simply go to HowsMyNanny.com, put in the license plate number and describe what they saw, and the parent is notified via email.

Our big question: so what do the nannies think of this?

It’s interesting to note that, so far, the overwhelming response from the nannies canvased is that they have no problem having a license plate put on their stroller; their view is that they are professionals and have nothing to hide. In fact, many nannies note that they are often the primary witnesses of any neglectful treatment, and are happy to have a way to report such incidences themselves. These nannies noted that if their stroller had these plates, they would also welcome the opportunity to have their employers receive unsolicited praise about them.

One more INCENTIVE to get your stroller “licensed”…

The participation fee for HowsMyNanny.com is reasonable ($50 per year; less for a multi-year package), all members of Executive Moms are being offered a special 20% DISCOUNT — when you enroll simply put “ExecutiveMoms” in the “referred by” section.

All the more reason to play a new version of the “license plate game” when you are walking around town…
