— NY METRO EDITION —

If you live in, or ever visit, Manhattan with kids, chances are you’ve wondered if the laws of car safety are given some kind of divine exemption. In fact, legally, taxis do have a state exemption from car seat laws, but there is a new transportation alternative should that not seem sufficient…

Kid Car NY was created to provide safe transportation for families travelling around New York City…

Essentially a kid-oriented car service, Kid Car NY’s fleet is comprised of new minivans instead of Town Cars, each of which has professionally installed car/booster seats and highly trained drivers (who know they should NOT talk on their cellphones and SHOULD help you with the stroller.

How It Works…

Primarly, Kid Car NY works on a membership basis; members can make car reservations online or over the phone. The parent or caregiver is called when the van is approaching, and the van is equipped with the right car seats for your children’s ages. Reservations can be made up to 1 month in advance for 1-time appointments. Recurring appointments (tutors, play dates, etc) can be made for up to 1 year.

What it Costs…

For the level of service that Kid Car NY offers, you will pay a premium price. For NYC families, there is an annual membership fee of $300 (though right now they are offering the first year at 50% off). Then each 1-way trip is $25 (no tipping). If you are carpooling, an intermediate stop entails a $10 surcharge.

For those just visiting Manhattan, Kid Car NY is introducing a Visiting Families option that enables you to skip the membership fee, but the individual trip is $35. For a special trip in to Manhattan for a museum or Broadway show, it’s a good, safe alternative. (Or of course, there’s always the subway)…
