As you’re shopping for the very youngest on your gift list, we were intrigued by this new technology in developmental toys…

The DVD MagIQ uses a DVD, and a toy that reacts along with it, to encourage even young babies to interact and learn.

In recent years, there have been a flood of baby- targeted DVDs to enter the market that strive to stimulate early development. What we thought made this one unique is that it creates a “triangle of interaction” between the DVD, your baby and a cuddly toy (a lamb or dog for the under-12 months set; a cow for those 1-3).
If the toy stays in close range of your TV’s speaker, it “responds” to the DVD by singing along and expressing itself with phrases like “peekaboo!” and “this is fun” that help prod your baby to learn similar responses.

And you CAN take it with you…

If baby (and you) can’t get enough of the songs and activities on the DVD, the MagIQ comes with a bonus Audio CD; take it in the car solo, or with the doll for close to the same effect. The only downsideùwith both the DVD and the CD, how you position the doll is important to how well it works (in fact, the instructions with the CD suggest you seatbelt the doll next to your child once you get the CD on).

That possible complexity not withstanding, there’s something to be said for turning a tiny couch potato into a happy jumping bean…
