If dialing for dinner reservations, whether for an important business dinner or a last minute meal with a friend, has ever proved more time consuming than the meal you were planning on enjoying, there is a potentially better way. We like the idea of trading the phone for your mouse to find…

An open table at one of your favorite restaurants– when you want.

OpenTable.com is a website that aggregates reservations from popular restaurants in key cities across the country, and makes it easy to search for a spot that suits your desires, so you can skip making those individual calls (and dealing with those imperious hosts).

Search by any number of criteria:

Planning dinner in a certain neighborhood? Select it, then drill down as you need by cuisine, price, date, number in your party… and time. A moment later, a list of all the restaurants the site features will come up, with possible table times. Simply click to book and your table will be waiting. (In NY, current favorite bookings on the site include Tao, Norma’s, Bouley and Union Square Cafe).

By signing up with the site, each reservation you make also accrues Dining Rewards, eventually redeemable for Dining Cheques at their participating restaurants.

And of particular interest to executive mom-types…

Take a look at their Power Lunches section, with special lunch menus and offers from restaurants that may meet your midday inclinations. Also, if you’re fortunate enough to have an assistant who might make your reservations for you, there is an “Administrative Personnel” option that allows someone else to book for you (while you can still earn those dining points).

Now if only booking the babysitter was this easy…

Reserve a table (while reserving your efforts) at opentable.com
