Maybe it’s from watching too many episodes of “The Amazing Race” (not to mention “Dora the Explorer”). But the concept of a no preparation required, family- friendly treasure hunt, complete with a map, clues (and a prize at the end) had us pretty intrigued.

It’s the Great Central Park Treasure Hunt

Just introduced, The Great Central Park Treasure Hunt is a do-it-yourself adventure. With a special 12-panel laminated map, kids and adults can hunt for and solve clues throughout the southern part of the park (most in kid-friendly spots like the zoo or carousel). After you’ve decoded all 15 clues, you can figure out a phrase which, when entered on their website with the map’s serial code, wins you “treasure” (via the mail).

Aside from the fun and fresh air… it’s a great lesson in orienteering

Chris Cassone, an expert in orienteering, was inspired to create this kind of adventure when he found his son’s scout troop could not read their maps. (In fact, studies show the U.S. scores second to last in geographical literacy). The result is indeed an excellent adventure, one that’s not too strenuous physically (you only have to walk; no digging required), but great as brain exercise. Estimated time to complete the whole adventure is 3-4 hours, so consider packing a lunch and making a fun half-day outing of it.

New GREAT TREASURE HUNTS are in the works for other cities, too,
including versions for Boston Common, the Capitol Mall and Grant Park in Chicago. Each map is $9.95 (pith helmets, pirate hats, and other favored explorer regalia not included).
