Even for Executive Moms members, who by definition show great enlightenment on the subject, the idea of “networking” can have a connotation akin to dieting (good for you, but a little onerous). One easy 2005 resolution then, is to approach networking with the right mindset:

First a (surprising) and perspective-lending definition: NETWORKING is actually the art and practice of GIVING to others–

–without the thought of personal gain– which eventually produces rewards in turn. Thus, consider that being a terrific “networker” is as much about sharing information and ideas as it is about simply seeking them.

From the new bestselling book NETWORKING MAGIC, here are some quick DON’TS and DOs that are less obvious than you might think:

Some of the DON’Ts:

  • Don’t pitch yourself, oversell or brag
  • Don’t act desperate
  • Don’t offer to do something that you can’t or misrepresent yourself
  • Don’t just talk about you
  • Don’t ask too soon for help
  • Don’t be discouraged

…And some of the best DOs:

  • Network with people you emulate
  • Talk to everyone you meet; listen intently; be willing to help
  • Start out with a question and a compliment
  • Jot “trigger” notes on the back of business cards you collect
  • Stay in touch via “thought this would be of interest to you” notes
  • If you see a mention in an article, send a kudos note (everyone loves acknowledgement)
  • Keep network referrers informed

And then of course, there’s this tip:

Participate in social and professional organizations that enable you to build your network … (Yeah, we’re a little partial to that one). Ultimately, perhaps the best way to think of networking is as your ultimate act of karma– as the authors say, “if you have a good time taking care of the people in your networks, then good things are bound to happen for you.”

(Now go post something on our site, or call someone)…
