If you’re feeling a little sobered in these post-New Year days, and not just because the champagne has gone flat and your next best chance at a short work week is President’s Day… it may have something to do with our protracted war and a recent rather large-scale natural disaster.

The bright spot, of course, has been the outpouring of generosity these events have inspired.

Should you be feeling similarly inclined, here’s a slightly different way of giving that gives you something lovely in return

The Circle of Love CD is a limited-edition collection of original songs, all themed around love and hope. It was initiated by music industry veteran Fred Thaler, who for a while had been composing songs aimed at philanthropic causes, but found he, his family and colleagues were particularly affected by the hardship facing U.S. service personnel in Iraq.

In response, he composed the 10 songs on the CD and enlisted great recording artists like Richie Havens to lend their voices

You can preview a couple of the songs on-line, one of which, “Crossroads,” won the prestigious John Lennon prize for songwriting. By the way, if the website looks a little basic and homespun–well, it is– but don’t be deterred…

As the best part is that all profits are being donated to the USO for Operation Care Package, which provides needed items to those serving overseas ($10 of every $13 CD sale). What’s more, a matching fund has just been set up so that every dollar from CD sales donated to the USO will now be met with a dollar to help the victims of the tsunami as well.

A $13 CD might not solve all the world’s problems, but a little reciprocal peace of mind does sound like music to our ears…
