As the new year gives pause for reflection on moments past and beckons with the promise of new beginnings, we wanted to leave you with some wisdom from the mouths of children– specifically children of working parents– on what they say they would most like us to know:

1. Work if you want to work.

“The father is not the only one who has to work. The mother can work if she wants. She has a right to be independent.” Girl, 13

2. We are proud of you.

“As hard as it may be, you’re doing a good job and keep up the good work.”  Boy, 14

3. Love us; raise us well.

“Love your kids for who they are, and kids, love your parents for who they are!”  Girl, 12

4. Keep on working and supporting your children.

“I appreciate you for trying to support your family.”  Boy, 8

5. Spend both focused and hang-around time with your children.

“The more time you spend with your kids, the stronger the bond between you. If you can’t find time, make time.”  Boy, 12

6. Put your family first.

“It’s okay to have a career as long as the parent is active in their child’s life — not only in school situations, but other obstacles in life as well.” Girl, 17

7. Be there for your children — or else.

“Please take care of your children because they can only be a child once.”  Girl, 12

8. Don’t bring the stress from work into the home.

“Leave your work at work and put on your parenting suit at home.”  Girl, 18

9. Find out what is going on in your children’s lives and tell them about yours.

“If a child has something to say, listen to them. They might teach you something.”  Girl, 14

10. Teach your children how to work.

“Let them know how to do something they’ll enjoy.”  Boy, 15
