Occasionally, the best things in life are indeed free.

For a limited time only, Theatreworks USA is offering free family theatre with the musical “Junie B. Jones”

Based on a few of the popular series of short books by Barbara Park, “Junie B. Jones” is a bright musical romp through the title character’s adventures in first grade.

Recommended for ages 6 and up (though our not- even-four-year-old was completely engaged), the talented cast, lively score (and reasonable one hour running time) made this perfectly palatable entertainment for adult tastes as well.

Ah, but (in theatrical parlance) here’s the rub…

Demand for tickets can exceed the supply. Unless you’re with a group of 10 or more, the only way to get them is to stand in line at the theatre itself (which is the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Greenwich Village, at 121 Christopher Street). Tickets are distributed beginning an hour before curtain time on the day of performance. The show runs through August 20th.

Presuming you get in, however, it’s a welcome way of offering your children a little slice of what makes New York so spectacular– a day at the theatre.
