Happy New Year! It’s inevitable that the first Momorandum of a new year would relate somehow to resolutions… (But NO, this is not about Atkins or Pilates). We did think, though, that should the turn of the calendar turn your thoughts to recoloring your career parachute, there are some interesting sources that you can browse (from the very desk you sit at now).

First, if a big change (like a new industry) is a real thought, start with some fast homework

Of course, you can start by raising your level of indignance with your current situation (or hey, maybe mollifying yourself) by seeing what the rest of the world gets paid at www.salary.com.

Then, to do some more solid, if introductory, research, the U.S. government sponsors a site called America’s Career InfoNet that gives a great deal of information on employment trends by occupation, wages, occupational requirements, market conditions… plus it has millions of employer contacts nationwide and perhaps the most extensive career resource library online. (Remember, though, it’s the U.S. government and it’s broad– so you may need to wade past their “spotlight on drilling and boring machine tool setters” for what you personally want to know.

Start those wheels turning on America’s Career InfoNet (www.acinet.org)

Really Looking? Supplement your rolodex of recruiters’ names by tapping into industry organizations

Job-Hunt.Org is one website that provides comprehensive listings of Internet-accessible job-search resources and services. They don’t post jobs– rather, they also act as a resource and a portal to other job search sites– and they actively screen the 2,700+ listings they carry to make sure they are legitimate. Of particular note: their annotated index of industry associations– many of which in turn do post significant jobs.

These resources all happen to be recommended by Nancy Collamer, career consultant and founder of jobsandmoms.com. Her site– which is notable in that it is specifically oriented toward helping professional women blend work and family– is itself a resource, with several helpful links. (It never hurts to LOOK, right)?
