So it looks like that old axiom, “if you want something done, ask a busy person” happens to be true… especially when it comes to women.

NEWSFLASH: A new study shows that professional women volunteer as much as their stay-at-home mothers did

According to new research from the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers University, women work full time as professionals and executives in greater numbers than ever before… but they are also volunteering in their communities as much ever.

In particular, the study found that professional women with children are just as involved as their mothers were in community activities (though we’ve focused on activities involving our kids). The big difference between then and now? Executive mom-types were found to approach those bake sales more like they do their board meetings– leading, outsourcing more, and delegating!

Of course, that everpresent catch-22 feeling permeated the study’s findings as well: not surprisingly, it was found that the price tag for succeeding at work while also maintaining strong ties to other communities is “relentless time pressure, and stress.” (That part we knew).

But the significant news lies in the study’s chief, and satisfying, conclusion: that working women today “demonstrate a level of leadership activity in the contexts of work, household and community that is not only remarkable but, so far at least, nearly unnoticed.” So let the world take notice! (Meanwhile, we need a nap)…
