If reading “The Nanny Diaries” was your idea of a busman’s holiday, than this may not be your idea of a fun night out. But if seeing what may well be a significant slice of your life depicted on the stage, this may be the theatre event for you.

Working mothers (of the executive and nanny variety) take the stage in “LIVING OUT” at the Second Stage Theatre

Written by Lisa Loomer (best known for “Girl, Interrupted”), “Living Out” explores the experience of working mothers from two different perspectives: the high- powered mother who hires a nanny to care for her child… and the Salvadoran nanny who has left behind children of her own to better her family’s circumstances through her employment. Though set in L.A., the themes are apparently eliciting both laughs and groans of recognition on this coast as well, in what has been described by reviewers as a “haunting, thought-provoking, bitingly funny” tragicomedy. (Variety)

In the playwright’s view, however, she was most interesting in exploring the idea of “us versus them,” with the hope that “people leave thinking maybe we have more in common than first thought.”
