It’s never too early to encourage your kids to do good unto others. Even kids as young as kindergarten age can get involved with volunteerism… and begin learning some of life’s most valuable lessons (not to mention reap some pretty nifty emotional rewards). For even the most time-strapped of parents, here are a few short-cuts to get you and them started:

Kids Can ZOOM into Action with the PBS show ZOOM!

ZOOM! challenges kids ages 5 to 11 to “turn off the TV and do it!,” with a program that encourages them to do community service. Kids send in reports on their efforts and hours served; the show has been keeping a running tally, and amazingly, they’re already at 854,000 hours. Best of all, the program prompts families to volunteer together and really make family time count.

The ZOOM! into Action web site lists a range of projects that you and the kids might enjoy, along with links and phone numbers to get you in touch with the applicable organization near you. To help parents round out the experience, Zoom! also provides after-volunteer reflection questions and further activities to help your family get the most of your good works together.

Need Another Option? Check Out NY-Based Kids for Community

If you’re interested in involving your kids with community-based volunteer work in the city, Kids for Community is the resouce that City Hall recommends. You can pick your neighborhood, the type of activity you want to do, enter your child’s age, and find a great volunteer opportunity that’s perfect for you.

Just one immediate example: kids aged 0-99 can join the Children’s Hope Foundation Team in the 2003 AIDS WALK NY coming up this Sunday, May 18, and raise money for kids and teens living with HIV and AIDS.
