Are you in a New York state of mind? (or New Jersey? Or Connecticut)? Here’s how you can get into one: share a little on-line lesson about your home state with the kids. We found content made just for them… but you may soon find yourself spouting trivia that would make Cliff Clavin envious.

I Love New York– for Kids

Visit this official website of New York made just for kids, and you’ll be surprised how much there is to have fun with, as well as learn. There’s no mess when the kids use virtual paint on a virtual coloring book of state symbols. For older ones, print out a crossword puzzle or word scramble of the same. (Perhaps you already knew the NYS flower was the rose… but did you know the state beverage is good old milk? Or that the state animal is a beaver)?

Brush up on the illustrious history of New York, and watch those car rides roll along when you impress fellow passengers with your knowledge that the NY state Thruway is actually the longest toll expressway in the world (but alas, in sheer land mass, New York is only #30).

Not to Be Outdone, There’s Lots to Learn About NJ and CT too!

At HangoutNJ for Kids, there are a plethora of educational games to play, like the Jersey Devils Squares Game, the State House Maze… and the ever popular “Hadrosaurus Foulkii Name Game” (that would be the name of Jersey’s own state dinosaur). One of the site’s best features? A cartoon history of the state. Check it out at: http://www.state.nj.us/hangout_nj/

Just like NY (and NJ too), at ConneCT Kids, there’s an instant source for coloring, plus similar games (like Jumble, Word Seek and Concentration) that make learning state trivia fun. (Connecticut’s state animal is the sperm whale, by the way). Of special note for parents: check out the link to the Homework Helper and the first searchable database of all CT schools.
