ATTENTION five boroughs Executive Moms (present and future): The rap on being a NYC dweller is that great public schooling is not a real option (or at least it can seem like finding a needle in a very bureaucratic haystack).

However, we found an amazing resource to help you find the best public schools in NY: Insideschools.org

Their experts have put together interesting, insightful and often encouraging reviews and statistics on over 400 public schools throughout the five boroughs (plus you can read up on what the school’s staff, parents and students really think).

Created by the non-proft organization Advocates for Children, Insideschools.org also provides a forum for parents– air your concerns and they’ll even make sure it gets to the school itself.

School reviews include references on everything from what the building itself is like, to the longevity and creativity of the teachers, to educational philosophies and descriptions of special programs. We particularly like details like this one about P.S. 290 on the Upper East Side:

“Teachers, who clearly love what they are doing, believe that children need to write from real experiences, and they make sure the kids have plenty of them. Children studying the civil rights movement, for example, interview a real-live hero about her experiences: the school’s security guard, Ida Chaplin, who helped integrate the Woolworth’s lunch counter at a 1960 sit-in in Greensboro, N.C.”

Now, if they just had the roadmap for how to improve school funding and reduce class size…
