While just about every aspect of
healthcare
has been a persistent topic in the national conversation, the part of the system
that most parents access most - general pediatric care - could arguably use
reform when it comes to working parents. In fact, one of the seldom
discussed issues of working moms is the angst and sense of conflict that every
serious sniffle or possible case of strep can summon, as it can mean an
impossible-to-coordinate 1:30 pm appointment, along with a waiting room delay
that you can only perversely hope was due to a real emergency, to consider it
tolerable. Many of us happen to love our pediatricians ... but still, you
have to wonder, what if it was more like the old days, when the doctor just came
to you when you needed?
For
very modern reasons, there is in fact a return to doctors making house calls
With a system that can be challenging both for doctors or patients, and rarely
delivering on
speed, extra attention or convenience,
there is a growing practice of doctors who are house call-oriented. A form
of
"concierge medicine,"
one of its sub-segments that is growing most is pediatrics. One such
practitioner who has developed a following in the New York metropolitan area is
Dr. Edward Kulich
(www.kidshousecalls.com),
an Ivy League educated, Board Certified Pediatrician who will come right to your
home, complete with all the necessary equipment (including strep and flu tests,
and common antibiotics) as well as a very good bedside manner.
According to Dr. Kulich, the kind of parents that have been most drawn to his
practice tend to be working parents (and not just the really wealthy
ones), those who don't want to have to worry about taking a day off for a basic
office visit, or want to avoid a long ER trip, or want more control and personal
attention, which a doctor on call who is servicing only hundreds, vs. thousands,
of patients per year can provide. While many make a concierge pediatrician
like Dr. Kulich their exclusive pediatrician, its possible to tap a doctor
making house calls as supplementary care when their primary physician isn't
available.
While
convenience and extra attention come with a price - that price is not
inconsistent with a standard office visit, and may be even better considering
that the flat rate
charged for a visit
(generally in the $250-$300 range during the day) includes any tests that
need to be done, and a full course of antibiotics. Patients pay up front,
and often out-of-network reimbursement is available through insurance.
Should you want to give
it a try, any member of Executive Moms can receive a $50 certificate toward
their first visit.
